Mission

Quality educational experiences are essential to preparing students for the future, yet systemic barriers create pronounced disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes. The Emily Krzyzewski Center, a nonprofit organization in Durham, NC, implements four distinct programs designed to build on the academic, career, and leadership potential of students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Collectively, our programs serve students from elementary school through college and equip them with the skills necessary to successfully complete higher education, connect to promising careers, and become agents of change within their communities. We amplify our efforts through partnerships with our local school district, community-based organizations, and universities.

K TO COLLEGE PROGRAMS - THE CENTER'S K TO COLLEGE PROGRAMS (PIONEER SCHOLARS, SCHOLARS TO COLLEGE, AND SCHOLARS ON CAMPUS) PROPEL ACADEMICALLY-FOCUSED, LOW-INCOME K-12 STUDENTS AND GRADUATES TOWARDS SUCCESS IN COLLEGE. THE PIONEER SCHOLARS PROGRAM ENSURES THAT OUR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE BUILDING ACADEMIC SKILLS, ACHIEVING IN SCHOOL, AND LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE COLLEGE SUCCESS. DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, OUR 86 PIONEER SCHOLARS STUDENTS (GRADES 1-8) PARTICIPATED IN AN AVERAGE OF 7.5 HOURS PER WEEK OF STRUCTURED TUTORING, ENRICHMENT, AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMING AT THE CENTER. IN ADDITION, DURING THE SUMMER, 48 OF OUR PIONEER SCHOLARS PARTICIPATED IN A TOTAL OF 90 HOURS EACH OF PROJECT-BASED ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND SKILL-BUILDING DESIGNED TO ENSURE THEIR READINESS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD. THE SCHOLARS TO COLLEGE PROGRAM ENSURES THAT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CHALLENGE THEMSELVES ACADEMICALLY AND PERSONALLY, BECOMING GRADUATING SENIORS WHO ARE SCHOLARSHIP-ELIGIBLE AND COLLEGE-READY. THIS YEAR, OUR 130 SCHOLARS TO COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN AN AVERAGE OF UP TO 5.5 HOURS OF WEEKLY CURRICULUM-BASED INSTRUCTION, INDIVIDUALIZED ACADEMIC AND COLLEGE ADVISING, 1:1 TUTORING, STANDARDIZED TEST PREPARATION, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES AT THE CENTER. THE SCHOLARS ON CAMPUS PROGRAM ENSURES THAT STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION TO HIGHER EDUCATION BY SUPPORTING THEIR ACADEMIC AND CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT, CAREER PLANNING, AND FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. THIS YEAR, 43 SCHOLARS ON CAMPUS STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN WORKSHOPS, INDIVIDUALIZED ADVISING, 1:1 CAMPUS VISITS AND A PRE-COLLEGE RETREAT. STUDENT PROGRESS IS EVALUATED ACROSS ALL THREE PROGRAMS USING QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT. THE FOLLOWING RESULTS FROM THE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR HIGHLIGHT JUST SOME OF OUR STUDENTS SUCCESSES. 84% OF OUR PIONEER SCHOLARS STUDENTS ARE ON-TRACK TO MEET COLLEGE READINESS BENCHMARKS IN ENGLISH, AND 78% ARE ON TRACK IN MATH. THE 34 GRADUATING SENIORS IN THE SCHOLARS TO COLLEGE CLASS OF 2019 EARNED 192 ACCEPTANCES TO 70 COLLEGES, AND EARNED $2,316,676 IN AWARD MONEY TO THE COLLEGES THEY WILL BE ATTENDING. 100% OF FIRST YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS IN SCHOLARS ON CAMPUS PERSISTED FROM SEMESTER 1 TO SEMESTER 2. STUDENTS SERVED BY THE GAME PLAN: COLLEGE PROGRAM REPORTED A 25% AVERAGE GAIN IN KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE ABOUT THE COLLEGE PROCESS AS A RESULT OF PROGRAM PARTICIPATION.
