Thornwell has been helping children and families all across South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida since 1875. Today, we continue our long history by offering a foster care program and other family & educational support programs. We provide safe and loving homes for children in need, offer hope for a brighter future through education and community-based programs, and encourage healing and wholeness with counseling & support.
About
RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM: 122 CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF BIRTH AND 24 WERE SERVED IN 2018. FOR 143 YEARS, THORNWELL HAS BEEN A SAFE AND WELCOMING PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN SHATTERED BY ABUSE, NEGLECT, DISPLACEMENT, AND ABANDONMENT. OTHERS COME FROM FAMILIES IN CRISIS SUCH AS THE SERIOUS ILLNESS OR DEATH OF A PARENT OR GRANDPARENT, PARENTAL DRUG OR ALCOHOL ADDICTION, FAMILY HOMELESSNESS - ANY SITUATION THAT THREATENS THE CHILD'S SAFETY AND/OR FAMILY STABILITY. CHILDREN LIVING ON THE THORNWELL CAMPUS ARE PROVIDED WITH LOVING CHRISTIAN HOMES, NUTRITIOUS MEALS, CLOTHING, EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT, MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE, AND MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING (ALL 122 CHILDREN RECEIVED COUNSELING IN 2018) TO HELP THEM HEAL FROM THE TRAUMAS THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED. IN ADDITION, THORNWELL USES THE EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING-FAMILY MODEL TO HELP OUR YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN THE SOCIAL AND INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS THEY WILL NEED TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF POVERTY, ABUSE, NEGLECT, DRUG ABUSE, DYSFUNCTION, OR HOMELESSNESS THAT HAVE PLAGUED THEIR FAMILIES.
