AS THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING, WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IDENTIFYING THE NEEDS OF ELDERS AND CAREGIVERS IN OUR REGION AND CONTRACTING WITH PROVIDERS FOR SERVICES TO ADDRESS THOSE NEEDS. WE ARE THEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STEWARDSHIP AND OVERSIGHT OF THE TAXPAYER AND DONOR DOLLARS. WE MAKE SURE THE SERVICES THAT ARE PROVIDED ARE A GOOD QUALITY SERVICE, THEY MEET THE STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS, THAT THOSE MOST IN NEED ARE GETTING THE SERVICES AND THE DOLLARS ARE WELL AND APPROPRIATELY SPENT. IN 2018 WE CONDUCTED THE REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT PROGRAM AND SMOOTHLY TRANSITIONED TO A NEW PROVIDER IN ONE OF OUR COUNTIES TO ENSURE SERVICES TO THE ELDERLY THERE WOULD CONTINUE WHEN THE FORMER PROVIDER WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO DELIVER SERVICES. THROUGH THIS RFP WE WERE ABLE TO ADD HOME REPAIR AND MODIFICATION SERVICES AS WELL AS MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING FOR ELDERS. TWO VERY NEEDED SERVICES TO HELP PEOPLE LIVE AND AGE WITH INDEPENDENCE AND DIGNITY IN THEIR HOMES AND COMMUNITY. AS THE AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING INFORMATION AND REFERRAL TO NEEDED RESOURCES FOR OLDER ADULTS, ADULTS AGE 18 AND OLDER WITH A DISABILITY AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. IN 2018, CUSTOMER SERVICES SPECIALISTS FIELDED 42,789 CALLS. WE ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR SCREENING INDIVIDUALS FOR THE VARIOUS STATE FUNDED PROGRAMS AS WELL AS THE MEDICAID MANAGED CARE LONG TERM CARE PROGRAM. IN SFY 2018-19, STAFF COMPLETED 8,505 ASSESSMENTS. WE ALSO ASSIST CLIENTS THROUGH THE ELIGIBILITY DETERMINATION PROCESS FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROGRAM APPROXIMATELY 150 TO 200 PEOPLE A MONTH. IN 2018 OUR SHINE PROGRAM (SERVING HEALTH INSURANCE NEEDS OF ELDERS) VOLUNTEERS MADE 12,000 CONTACTS TO INDIVIDUALS SEEKING ASSISTANCE WITH THEIR MEDICARE BENEFITS. WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE THEM OVER $5 MILLION ON MEDICARE PART D AND $2.6 MILLION FROM THE MEDICARE SAVINGS PLAN. IN 2018, THROUGH OUR SENIOR TO SENIOR PROGRAM SUPPORTED BY THE J. WAYNE AND DELORES BARR WEAVER FOUNDATION AT THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND THE JIM MORAN FAMILY FOUNDATION, WE WERE ABLE TO HELP 163 PEOPLE RESOLVE A FINANCIAL CRISIS AS WELL AS THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF THEIR CRISIS. IN 2018 WE LAUNCHED THE DEMENTIA CARE AND CURE INITIATIVE WITH A TASK FORCE FOCUSED ON HELPING MAKE NORTHEAST FLORIDA FRIENDLY FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA AND THEIR CAREGIVERS.
