OPERATION OF NON-FOR-PROFIT HOSPITAL PROVIDING INPATIENT, OUTPATIENT, & EMERGENCY CARE FOR RESIDENTS OF SOUTHERN LAKE COUNTY FLORIDA. THE HOSPITAL PROVIDES CARE TO PATIENTS WHO MEET CERTAIN CRITERIA UNDER ITS CHARITY CARE POLICY WITHOUT CHARGE OR AT AMOUNTS LESS THAN ITS ESTABLISHED RATES. TOTAL PATIENT DAYS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR WERE OVER 47,000. COMMUNITY EDUCATION SOUTH LAKE HOSPITAL IS DEDICATED TO FURTHERING THE HEALTH-RELATED EDUCATION OF THE COMMUNITY. CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE TO AREA RESIDENTS. EATING WELL WITH DIABETES EDUCATION ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA, DIABETES CONSISTENTLY RANKS AMONG THE TOP FIVE RISKS IN THE REGIONS HEALTHCARE ASSESSMENTS. ORLANDO HEALTH SOUTH LAKE HOSPITAL HAS IDENTIFIED COMMUNITY EDUCATION AS A KEY APPROACH TO ADDRESSING THIS CHRONIC CONDITION IN THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES. EACH MONTH, THE HOSPITAL HOSTS ITS EATING WELL WITH DIABETES CLASSES FOR PATIENTS, CAREGIVERS AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE FREE CLASSES TAUGHT BY A SOUTH LAKE HOSPITAL CLINICAL DIETITIAN REVIEW THE DISEASE PROCESS, DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA, LABS AND MACRONUTRIENTS (PROTEINS, FATS, CARBOHYDRATES). STRATEGIES SUCH AS THE MYPLATE TOOL DEVELOPED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. DURING THE TWO-AND-A-HALF-HOUR CLASS, PARTICIPANTS ALSO REVIEW FLUID NEEDS, FOOD MODELS/PORTION SIZES AND LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY READ FOOD LABELS. ALL OF THIS INFORMATION CAN HELP ATTENDEES BECOME MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT WAYS TO MANAGE THEIR DIABETES CONDITION. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HEALTH EDUCATION ROAD SHOWS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, ORLANDO HEALTH SOUTH LAKE HOSPITAL PROVIDED STUDENTS AT NINE LAKE COUNTY PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WITH AN INTERACTIVE, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ON DIET AND EXERCISE. TOPICS COVERED DURING THE PRESENTATIONS INCLUDED NUTRITION, FITNESS AND HAND WASHING. STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THE DIFFERENT FOOD GROUPS AND HOW TO MAKE A HEALTHY, BALANCED MEAL. USING FAKE FOOD MODELS, THEY PUT TOGETHER A BALANCED MEAL THAT INCORPORATED DIFFERENT FOOD CHOICES. THEY RECEIVED EASY-TO-MAKE RECIPES THEY COULD TAKE HOME TO ENCOURAGE THEIR PARENTS TO PREPARE BALANCED MEALS. RECIPES CONSISTED OF READILY AVAILABLE INGREDIENTS THAT WERE BOTH INEXPENSIVE AND HEALTHY, MAKING THE RESULTING MEALS AFFORDABLE AND ACHIEVABLE. THE STUDENTS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN AN EXERCISE CLASS SET TO MUSIC TO SHOW THEM HOW EASY AND FUN IT IS TO GET ACTIVE AND WORKOUT. THEY ALSO RECEIVED TIPS FOR EXERCISING AT HOME OR AT LOCAL PARKS. FINALLY, THEY LEARNED ABOUT GERM PREVENTION, THE CORRECT WAY TO WASH THEIR HANDS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER HYGIENE. RESPONDING TO A PANDEMIC CURRENTLY, THE ORGANIZATION IS RESPONDING TO THE COVID-19 THREAT. WITH A LEVEL ONE TRAUMA CENTER AND A SAFETY NET HOSPITAL, ORLANDO HEALTH HAS BEEN A FOCAL POINT FOR CENTRAL FLORIDAS RESPONSE TO THE DISEASE.
