FOUNDED IN 1985, THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM IS THE FIRST MUSEUM IN AMERICA FOUNDED BY AN ARTIST IN HIS LIFETIME AND DEVOTED TO HIS OWN WORK. FORMERLY A FACTORY BUILDING AND GAS STATION LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE STUDIO WHERE NOGUCHI HAD WORKED AND LIVED SINCE THE EARLY 1960, THE MUSEUM AND ITS ENCIRCLING GARDEN WERE DESIGNED BY NOGUCHI. FIRST OPENED ON A SEASONAL SCHEDULE, THE MUSEUM IS NOW OPEN YEAR-ROUND, AND OFFERS A VARIETY OF EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS THAT INTRODUCE THE ARTIST'S WORK TO DIVERSE AUDIENCES. THE MUSEUM SERVES THE INTERNATIONAL ART COMMUNITY BY LOANING WORKS TO OTHER INSTITUTIONS FOR SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS, ORGANIZING TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS, AND OFFERING SCHOLARS ACCESS TO THE ARTIST'S ARCHIVES.
