Mission

Pacific Forest Trust’s mission is to sustain America’s forests for all of their public benefits of wood, water, wildlife and people’s well-being in cooperation with landowners and communities. We are a visionary “think-and-do” organization of scientists, conservationists, policy wonks, entrepreneurs and outdoor enthusiasts that has helped shape forest conservation and climate policy since 1993. PFT is a recognized leader in developing and promoting innovative climate policies and incentives-based revenue streams, grounded in forest conservation. By implementing tangible, practical and innovative solutions in partnership with forest landowners we’ve led the conservation of over 285,000 acres of vital forestland in the Pacific Northwest and hold easements covering 106,000 acres in CA and OR.

About

Forest Conservation and Stewardship By the end of 2019, PFT served as a grantee, monitoring and providing stewardship services on a total of 32 conservation easements on 106,878 acres in California and Oregon. PFT owns and manages 897 forested acres along the border of Yosemite National Park, as well as 540 acres of mixed evergreen forestland on the Outlet Creek Ranch in Mendocino County, California. These lands are conserved, managed and monitored for water, wildlife, and climate values. In 2019, PFT received a donation of a conservation easement on 341 acres of the Green Gorge Forest in Mendocino County, California. Approximately half of PFTs property adjacent to Yosemite National Park was severely burned in the 2018 Ferguson Fire. With financial assistance from the US Department of Agricultures Natural Resources Conservation Service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, in 2019 we performed clean-up and salvage operations, and in 2020 work on reforesting this property continues, with drainage improvements, erosion control and tree planting. PFT is engaging in ongoing discussions with forest landowners in California and Oregon regarding opportunities for future easement and fee title acquisitions. PFT continues to work with a diverse group of stakeholders on the Klamath-Cascade Advisory Council, as well as conducting field trips and public outreach and educating key stakeholders about the importance of conserving working forests in the Klamath-Cascade region. Forests are central to the ecological health of this critical watershed that provides drinking water for 25+ million Californians.
