About

The diverse stories that comprised Da Camera's 2017-18 season 'No Place Like Home' approached the meanings of home in different ways. Da Camera celebrated its rich past by bringing back the Juilliard Quartet. Also, to salute the city's contributions to this art form, the 2017-18 season included three jazz homecomings of native stars as part of a 7 concert series. Also Da Camera considered the role of 'home' for composers, from the evolution of 'house music' chamber forms like the string quartet and Beethoven's piano sonatas to American maverick Charles Ives's haunting childhood memories of hymns and folk tunes. The theme also asked about the meaning of home on a larger scale. That season included musicians from around the world who have chosen to make America their home to American-born artists of a variety of heritages. The question of home also brings up its opposite: homelessness and exile. Schubert's great song cycle, Winter's Journey, evoked a solitary wanderer. This was set against the backdrop of the evocative installations of Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum at the Menil Collection
