ZERO1 connects creative explorers in art, science, and technology to provoke and explore new ideas that build engaged and vibrant communities.

About

American Arts Incubator is an initiative of the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) developed in partnership with ZERO1. AAI sends a U.S. artist abroad to collaborate with local communities in each exchange country during a month-long incubator. These creative collaborations transfer skills in art, technology, and entrepreneurship. Through digital and new media art workshops, they facilitate dialogue and explorations of the social challenge. There is a focus on selecting participants who identify as youth, women, people with disabilities, and underserved populations. AAI provides small grants to participants who break into teams to prototype creative projects applying workshop skills to the challenge. 20 teams received funding to work on their projects. Each exchange culminates in an open house that showcases the prototypes and solicits public feedback.Throughout the spring 2018 program dates, five selected U.S. artists worked with local arts, cultural, and educational partners to host workshop programs that would inspire creative ideas for community progress. American Arts Incubator engaged a total of 1762 participants, including 126 workshop participants and attendees to public events, including artist presentations, artist-led community conversations, panel reviews, and final exhibitions of program outputs. From September 7-16, 2018 "Coming Home" engaged roughly 600 San Franciscans at Proxy SF through eight augmented reality and audio scenes about homelessness filmed across San Francisco's neighborhoods. The augmented reality and audio experience offered locals an opportunity to hear stories from those who currently live on the street, as well as those who have moved on from being homeless. These stories are also accessible through the Layar application on Apple devices no matter the users location, which allowed for greater reach of these narratives. The installation was created by contemporary artist and AAI alumnus John Craig Freeman, as well as Sound Made Public sound artists Tania Ketenjian and Philip Wood. The project was co-produced with nonprofit Lava Mae, which brings mobile shower and restroom facilities to people living on the streets.
