Mil Milagros, Inc. (A Thousand Miracles) equips mothers and teachers with skills and resources to improve the lives of children and families in rural Guatemala.
About
Early childhood development program - In 2018, we taught 209 mothers about early childhood development, nutrition, health/hygiene, and parenting in bi-weekly workshops, and we served 301 children from birth through age five. Participants received nutritional supplements, food staples, and hygiene supplies. Severe chronic child malnutrition was reduced by 17% and overall chronic child malnutrition was reduced by 6%. Nutrition program - In 2018, 612 mother and grandmother volunteers were engaged and trained to prepare nourishing, hot meals each school day. Children brought firewood for the school stoves and their own dishes to school. The volunteers served 135,740 meals. By feeding the children at school, they come to school and stay in school. In 2018, 100% of the sixth graders in our eight partner schools graduated, compared to the regional graduation rate of 51%. Education program - In 2018, MM provided all eight partner schools with books and school supplies, as well as literacy training for the teachers. In 2018, 75% of first graders were reading on grade level and 93% of sixth graders were assessed to be functionally literate.
