Accomplishments

  • Operation school bell(r)working in partnership with the el dorado county office of education and the el dorado county target, and kmart, the assistance league sierra foothills was able to provide new, warm, comfortable and appropriate clothing for children in need in elementary and middle schools. assistance league sierra foothills assists the children and their parent/guardian with shopping sprees at local discount stores in south lake tahoe, placerville and el dorado hills. children from forty-five (45) different schools in the county participated in the program and more schools will be added next year. we also partner with first national book bank and scholastic books to give each child an age appropriate book. too often this is the first book some of the children have ever owned. sixty-one (61) members volunteered hundreds of hours to ensure the success of this program. this year we were able to clothe nine hundred eighty-two (982) children in el dorado county at a cost of $79,402.26 this signature program improves self-esteem and attitudes about attending school. Expenses $79,402.
  • Sports lockerassistance league sierra foothills partners with local soccer and baseball youth sports leagues. this year, nine (9) members hard work allowed eighty (80) children from sierra gold soccer club, gold nugget soccer club, gold rush soccer league, snowline little league, hangtown little league and el dorado hills little league to receive new sports equipment and scholarships for registration fees at a cost of $15,187.20. children develop a positive self-image, leadership skills and team spirit through involvement with youth sport. Expenses $15,186.
  • Senior holiday shopping spreethis program gives seniors in skilled nursing facilities the opportunity to shop for loved ones for the holidays. members donate new and gently used household items, clothing, books and jewelry and set up a boutique at the placerville senior day care center, gold country retirement center and el dorado hills day care center for one day in december at each location. seniors shop for their loved ones (free of charge) and their gifts are wrapped and tagged. this year sixty (60) seniors shopped at the boutique with the help of eighteen (18) members of the assistance league sierra foothills. this program will merge next year with the s.m.i.l.e. program. Expenses $360.
  • Books and beyondtrained members of assistance league sierra foothills meet weekly with children, grades 2 and 3, with reading and comprehension levels below their age group. this year thirty-six (36) members of assistance league sierra foothills met with one hundred sixy-five (165) children at silva valley elementary school, buckeye elementary school, jackson elementary school, wm. brooks elementary school, camino elementary school, blue oak elementary and green valley elementary school. these trained volunteers work individually with the children to support their developing literacy and comprehension skills. a total of one thousand eight hundred two (1,802) hours were volunteered. at the end of the school year, a book was given to each child participating in the program. Expenses $753.
  • S.m.i.l.e. (senior multi-interest leisure enrichment)each month members of assistance league sierra foothills provide a stimulating interactive program for the residents at the gold country retirement center. activities have included game and beauty days, painting and crafts, cookie decoration, a tea party and storytelling. eighteen (18) volunteers have helped make this program a success this year. one hundred seventy-three (173) seniors participated during the year. next year the senior holiday shopping spree program will merge with s.m.i.l.e. to offer a special holiday event. Expenses $213.
  • Community service scholarshipfour $1,250.00 scholarships were awarded to el dorado county high school seniors who demonstrated outstanding community service work throughout their high school years. twelve (12) members of assistance league sierra foothills served on the scholarshipcommittee. a new scholarship, the advantage scholarship, will be added next year increasing the number of scholarships awarded. Expenses $5,088.
  • Bags for belongingsthis program provides duffle bags to children who are being removed from their homes and foster children who are being relocated. these children often do not have a personal bag in which to carry their belongings. this year, one hundred (100) bags were distributed. Expenses $1,021.
