1) HEARTS & HOMES / WESTCHESTER REFUGEE INITIATIVEGUIDED BY OUR MISSION TO "....EDUCATE, INSPIRE AND EQUIP OTHERS" OUR ROLE HAS GROWN. HEARTS & HOMES HAS BECOME A CONVENER AND LEADER IN RESETTLEMENT AND WELCOMING. WE SEED FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AND FOSTER CULTURAL COMPETENCE. WE ACCOMPLISH OUR GOALS THROUGH TWO OF OUR LARGEST PROGRAMS:WESTCHESTER REFUGEE INITIATIVEHEARTS & HOMES FOR REFUGEES ESTABLISHED THE WESTCHESTER REFUGEE INITIATIVE (WRI) PROGRAM IN 2018. HEARTS & HOMES LEADS THIS COALITION OF REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PARTNERS AND SUPPORTERS TO DEEPEN THE WELCOMING MOVEMENT THAT HAS TAKEN ROOT IN COMMUNITIES IN AND AROUND WESTCHESTER COUNTY SINCE 2016. THROUGH THIS GRASSROOTS COLLABORATION WE SHARE KNOWLEDGE, BEST PRACTICES, RESOURCES AND EXPERTISE TO MORE EFFECTIVELY ASSIST AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR NEW NEIGHBORS. THROUGH THE WRI, HEARTS & HOMES CULTIVATES BROADER INTEREST IN WELCOMING AND ASSISTING REFUGEES. THE FOUNDATION OF OUR WORK IS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH, THROUGH WHICH WE IDENTIFY AND NURTURE AVAILABLE SUPPORT AND RESOURCES WITHIN WESTCHESTER COUNTY AND BEYOND. WE ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN PARTNERSHIPS WITH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, STUDENT/YOUTH GROUPS, HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS, HOUSES OF WORSHIP, AND COMMUNITY AND CIVIC GROUPS, TO ENGAGE VOLUNTEERS AND CULTIVATE INTEREST AND PARTICIPATION IN CREATIVE YET PRACTICAL WAYS TO DIRECTLY ASSIST REFUGEES AS THEY STRIVE TO THRIVE IN THEIR NEW LIVES. RESULTS INCLUDED: A SEASONAL DONATIONS DRIVE THAT ENGAGED DOZENS OF VOLUNTEERS AND GATHERED, SORTED AND DISTRIBUTED WINTER CLOTHING, TOILETRIES AND TOYS TO OVER 450 REFUGEES AND ASYLEES IN THE TRI-STATE AREA; A BACKPACK AND SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE FOR REFUGEES IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY. IN TOTAL, OUR VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTED OVER 4,000 HOURS OF SERVICE TO REFUGEES IN 2019. RELATED EXPENSES INCLUDE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT, MARKETING EFFORTS AND PROGRAM OVERSIGHT. HEARTS & HOMES HAS ALSO CREATED OF A ONLINE "RESOURCE BANK" SO THAT REFUGEES AND VOLUNTEERS ALIKE IN THE WESTCHESTER REFUGEE INITIATIVE KNOW WHERE TO FIND NEEDED RESOURCES.OUTREACH AND EDUCATIONHEART'S & HOME'S MISSION IS TO ASSIST IN THE DIRECT RESETTLEMENT OF REFUGEES AND TO "INSPIRE, EDUCATE AND EQUIP OTHERS TO DO THE SAME". TO THIS END, HEARTS & HOMES ORGANIZED AND PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY EVENTS TO DISCUSS ISSUES RELATING TO RESETTLEMENT, REFUGEE AND IMMIGRATION POLICY. WE SPOKE TO COMMUNITY GROUPS AND SCHOOLS TO BUILD AWARENESS AROUND THE CURRENT REFUGEE CRISIS WITH HOPES OF CULTIVATING AND ENLISTING ADVOCATES, VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE WELCOMING MOVEMENT. WE ALSO CONVENED A VOLUNTEER TEAM OF EDUCATORS AND OVERSAW THE DEVELOPMENT OF A "REFUGEES IN LITERATURE" CLASSROOM TOOL OF RECOMMENDED READING AND CLASSROOM GUIDES. RELATED EXPENSES INCLUDE DESIGN AND PRINTING OF MATERIALS SUCH AS BROCHURES, HANDOUTS, POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS AND THE READING LIST, AS WELL AS COORDINATION OF EVENT PARTICIPATION.FOR BOTH PROGRAMS (WRI AND OUTREACH/EDUCATION), OUR INVESTMENTS ARE LEVERAGED EXPONENTIALLY BY THE IN-KIND AND SERVICE CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY OUR VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS.2) RESETTLEMENT AND POST-RESETTLEMENT SUPPORTHEARTS & HOMES PARTNERS WITH CATHOLIC CHARITIES TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A PROGRAM PROVIDING "POST-RESETTLEMENT" SUPPORT TO REFUGEES WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE U.S. MORE THAN ONE YEAR AND TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO HAVE BEEN GRANTED ASYLUM. IN 2019, 39 REFUGEES AND ASYLEES RECEIVED SHORT-TERM SUPPORT (OVER 750 VOLUNTEER HOURS AND IN-KIND DONATIONS VALUED AT OVER $10,000) FROM 9 PARTICIPATING COMMUNITY GROUPS. EXPENSES FOR THIS PROGRAM (HELPING HANDS) INCLUDED:A. SUPPORT TO CASE MANAGERS WHO IDENTIFY FAMILIES FOR THE PROGRAM AND DISCERN THEIR NEEDS.B. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND MANAGEMENT. DOZENS OF VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE FINANCIAL RESOURCES, IN-KIND DONATIONS AND MENTORSHIP TO THE IDENTIFIED CASES. HEARTS & HOMES PROVIDES SUPPORT ON AN AS-NEEDED BASIS FOR REFUGEES AND ASYLEES IN WESTCHESTER, IDENTIFYING NEEDS, PROCURING IN-KIND DONATIONS AND COORDINATING VOLUNTEERS. DONATIONS INCLUDE HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES, VEHICLES, LAPTOPS, TRANSPORTATION PASSES, GROCERY GIFT CARDS, CLOTHING, SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND MORE, AS WELL AS DONATIONS OF SERVICES SUCH AS ENGLISH TUTORING, CAREER MENTORSHIP, TRANSPORTATION AND MORE. HEARTS & HOMES ALSO SUPPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR REFUGEES TO SOCIALIZE AND ACCULTURATE, FOR EXAMPLE BY PROVIDING FUNDING TO A FAMILY SUMMER CAMP FOR REFUGEES.3) ADVOCACYAS PART OF ITS SUPPORT OF REFUGEES, HEARTS & HOMES ADVOCATES FOR INCREASED REFUGEE ADMISSIONS, FULFILLMENT OF THE U.S. PROMISE TO GRANT SPECIAL IMMIGRATION VISAS TO ALLIES, AND A JUST AND COMPASSIONATE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM THAT UPHOLDS THE LEGAL RIGHT TO SEEK ASYLUM. WE SHARE THESE MESSAGES AT PUBLIC SPEAKING AND COMMUNITY EVENTS AS WELL AS THROUGH OUR NEWSLETTER AND SOCIAL MEDIA, AND WE INVITE OTHERS TO JOIN US BY CALLING AND WRITING THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS. RELATED EXPENSES INCLUDE PRINTING OF POSTCARDS, POSTAGE, MESSAGE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAM COORDINATION.
