Mission

InteRoots is a U.S. based initiative that partners with projects and funders both domestically and internationally. We work with communities – on their own terms – as they develop and implement sustainable solutions for self-identified needs.

About

InteRoots was founded by our Chair, Ronald Kibirige, and our Executive Director, M. Scott Frank. Ronald and Scott’s friendship was sparked in 2008 when they led a musical collaboration between students from Stanford University and children of the Peace Africa Children’s Ensemble, a nonprofit from Uganda. The music was an inspiration, highlighting the innate human ability to connect and communicate beyond barriers of language and history. But the experience also provoked a larger discussion regarding the barriers between us, especially those implicit in our partnerships despite the best of intentions. Over the next decade, the conversation developed, ultimately focusing on how nonprofit work could evolve to address inequity and better serve communities. In 2018, Ronald and Scott founded The InteRoots Initiative to put this conversation into action. The services we provide include but are not limited to: - Project planning support - Fundraising (grantmaking, sponsorship, grant writing, partnership building) - Project workshopping, or as we call it, ”Project Incubation” - Facilitation of access to targeted resources when requested - Donor consultancy and engagement Our goal is to work with projects and supporters to develop sustainable, community-run enterprises. We are a partner and facilitator, working to remove barriers between communities and the resources they need to achieve meaningful change. Once a project is financially independent, we step aside, thus redefining legacies of charitable giving.

Accomplishments

  • 2019 was the first full year of operation for the interoots initiative. organizational work in 2019 centered on essential capacity building as interoots assembled the infrastructure it will need to carry out its mission. this internal effort included but was not limited to: cultivation of a support base through a robust grassroots campaign, achieving 501(c)3 classification, origination and implementation of all internal organizational processes, and the generation of a wide array of tools to carry out the interoots mission in the long-term. beyond intensive and necessary work on infrastructure, interoots also engaged in preparatory work, in partnership with the community of kasasa, uganda, for its pilot project: the tat sat community academy. this included an initial "seed grant," which was awarded to the community to lay the groundwork for its project vision. during this "incubation" phase, interoots also generated wide-ranging programming systems that it will utilize for years to come with other projects. interoots' work in 2019 was funded completely by an initial contribution of 100,000. no funds raised in 2019, beyond the initial contribution, were used for organizational development and associated costs. funds raised in 2019 will only be utilized after tat sat community academy project programming begins in april 2020 when full-scale programming expenditures initialize. Expenses $2,262.
