Mission

Our mission is "to teach and preserve boatbuilding and marine systems while developing the individual as a craftsperson." Set against the backdrop of over 100 marine businesses on Port Townsend Bay, the Boat School serves to bring talented and creative people to Jefferson County in Washington State, thereby serving its immediate geographic area with an influx of talented boatbuilders and craftspeople. The students who are served by programs at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding are drawn from around the country and around the world due to the school's strong reputation and unique focus. The school's projects have been featured nationally in Wooden Boat Magazine and in Off Center Harbor's videos.

TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY WOODEN BOATBUILDING PROGRAMS ARE COMPREHENSIVE 12 MONTH DEGREE PROGRAMS. THE 90 CREDIT AOS DEGREE PROGRAM IN TRADITIONAL WOODEN BOATBUILDING TEACHES STUDENTS TO BUILD A VARITY OF TRADITIONALLY CONSTRUCTED VESSELS AND PREPARES THEM FOR ENTRY-LEVEL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD OF WOODEN BOAT BUILDING INCLUDING TRADITIONAL BOAT SHOPS, SHIP YARDS, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND MARIITME MUSEUMS. THE 90 CREDIT AOS DEGREE PROGRAM IN COMTEMPORARY WOODEN BOAT BUILDING TEACHES STUDENTS THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY OF WOODEN BOAT CONSTRUCTION THAT IS EMPLOYED BY MANY YACHT MANUFACTURERS AND WOODEN BOAT BUILDERS WHO ARE MELDING THE AESTHETICS OF WOOD WITH THE ADVANTAGE OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE ADHESIVES AND SHEATHING MATERIALS.
