Redeemer Community Partnership is a non-profit, Christian community development corporation seeking to create a safe, healthy, opportunity-rich community in South LA where children and their families thrive.

About

FY2019 Program AccomplishmentsJuly 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 ADVENTURES AHEADThe goal of Adventures Ahead is to improve education outcomes for elementary students by achieving grade-appropriate literacy and nurturing each childs development as a lifelong reader. Students who remained with the program for a full year averaged 1.24 years of improvement in their reading proficiency. Adventures Ahead is closing the achievement gap for children in South LA and nurturing in each one a life-long love for reading. ADVENTURES IN ROBOTICSAdventures in Robotics allows elementary school students the opportunity to engage in authentic engineering and programming experiences as a part of a FIRST Lego League (FLL) team while being mentored by members of the USC and Exposition Park community. In 2012-2013, we registered our first team of 2nd-5th grade students to participate in FLL Tournaments. This year, our students built a robot using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits and successfully programmed several missions for the FLL Into Orbit Challenge. We also took six first time robotics students to participate in the Spring Showdown at Legoland. Adventures in Robotics is a critical part of our strategy to nurture high academic achievement and a love for learning that bridges children to college and fulfilling careers. School Choice Family Outreach ProjectThe neighborhood that Redeemer Community Partnership serves contains some of the lowest performing schools in the state of California. But students also have access to high-performing magnet schools with free transportation, charter schools that are boosting student achievement with innovative strategies, special programs led by local universities and a small number of neighborhood schools that are beating the odds. Over the years we have seen that many families either dont know about the options available or cannot figure out how to access better opportunities. To address this knowledge gap we published a full-color guidebook in Fall 2018, with easily understandable graphics, data charts, maps and instructions for various types of applications. We printed 500 booklets in English and 500 in Spanish. We also posted a bilingual video online. During Fall 2019 we were not able to fund printed booklets. But we have continued to share links to our online school choice guide and informational videos. Our community continues to request and utilize these resources regularly. MAKE JEFFERSON BEAUTIFULMake Jefferson Beautiful is a community-driven campaign to enhance the beauty, safety and health of our South LA neighborhood by revitalizing a major commercial corridor, facilitating active modes of transportation (such as walking and biking), and activating the corridor for community-serving businesses. Working closely with the City of Los Angeles, we continued to lay the groundwork for a $7 million improvement project along Jefferson Blvd. Using funds from an Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant secured in June 2016, the plan will install bike lanes, pedestrian street lighting, curb extensions and a planted median to improve safety for people walking and biking on Jefferson Blvd. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2021. As the implementation of those plans is underway, we have participated in monthly all-hands meetings with our council office and several other City departments to advance design, planning and engineering. We worked with the council office to secure an additional $700,000 support from the Mayors office for four enhanced traffic and pedestrian crossing signals in the project area, and led an organizing effort to establish a new Lighting District self-assessment tax on Jefferson Blvd in order to include more pedestrian level lights as part of the project improvements. The Lighting District passed with an overwhelming 77% support from adjacent property owners. We also partnered with our local neighborhood council and nonprofit organizations to host a community clean-up and tree planting event on Jefferson Blvd. More than 75 community members participated. END NEIGHBORHOOD DRILLINGThe Jefferson Drill Site, operated by Sentinel Peak Resources, sits in the middle of our residential neighborhood just a few feet from neighboring homes. The drill site severely impacts community health and safety. In 2013 RCP became a founding member of STAND (Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling), a grassroots coalition working to increase health and safety protections near drill sites and eventually, to end neighborhood oil drilling. Our continued efforts to organize a large number of community residents to testify at a city hearing regarding the impacts of the Jefferson Drill site on our communitys health, safety and quality of life led the City of Los Angeles to impose more protective operating conditions on the facility. In the fall of 2018, the operators announced they plan to close down the site rather than comply. The City then held a public hearing in January 2019 to outline new terms and conditions now that the facility is on track to close. We again organized community members to ensure that the closing process continues to safeguard community health and safety. We urged the City to require benchmarks and accountability measures to ensure the site is closed in a timely manner. The determination was released May of 2019, and the City is requiring the operators to abandon all wells and conduct some remediation within 36 months. SPR has since shared a report to the City stating that they expect to plug and abandon all the wells and conduct some level of remediation within 19 months, by January 24, 2022. We hosted a community celebration at one of our local parks to commemorate this answer to prayer and victory for the health and safety of our community. Neighbors with faith the size of a mustard seed have thrown a toxic mountain (i.e. Sentinel Peak) out of our community. Generations of children will now play during the day and sleep at night without a toxic threat to their health and without fear of catastrophic disaster. Oil and gas will remain safely in the ground, unburned in the air we breathe.
