THE SIUSLAW WATERSHED COUNCIL SUPPORTS SOUND ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL USES OF NATURAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE SIUSLAW RIVER BASIN. THE COUNCIL ENCOURAGES COOPERATION AMONG PUBLIC AND PRIVATE WATERSHED ENTITIES TO PROMOTE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF WATERSHED FUNCTIONS BY ADOPTING AND IMPLEMENTING A TOTAL WATERSHED APPROACH TO NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTION.

IN 2018 SIUSLAW WATERSHED COUNCIL, INC. HAD APPROXIMATELY 200 PAID MEMBERS, THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERISM, APPROXIMATELY 250 VOLUNTEERS AND OVER 30 ACTIVELY FUNDED PROGRAMS MEETING OUR STATED MISSION. THE ORGANIZATION ISSUED MONTHLY PUBLICATIONS AND HELD REGULAR MEETINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. SPECIFIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED: 1. WE COMPLETED SPAWNING SURVEYS ON 2.5 MILES OF COHO HABITAT IN UPPER LAKE CREEK 2. HABITAT SURVEYS WERE COMPLETED ON 1.5 MILES IN DOGWOOD CREEK 3. WE COLLECTED WATER QUALITY DATA AT 15 SITES 4. WE MEASURED JUVENILE SALMON ABUNDANCE AT KNOWLES CREEK SMOLT TRAP WITH OUR PARTNERS AT THE SIUSLAW NATIONAL FOREST, MAPLETON AND SIUSLAW SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND THE SIUSLAW INSTITUTE AND VOLUNTEERS 5. WE GAVE AWAY 8,000 NATIVE PLANTS TO RIPARIAN LANDOWNERS 6. WE CONDUCTED SITE PREP ON 850 STREAM FEET, RIPARIAN PLANTING ALONG 4,635 STREAM FEET, AND SEEDLING RELEASE ON OVER 2 MILES OF RIPARIAN CORRIDOR 7. WE SEEDED 200 LBS OF NATIVE PLANT SEED 8. WE PLANTED 27,000 TREES AND SHRUBS AT FIVEMILE BELL, A WHOLE-VALLEY RESTORATION PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SIUSLAW NATIONAL FOREST AND SIUSLAW INSTITUTE 9. WE BUILT 1,500 FEET OF RIPARIAN FENCING TO PROTECT NATIVE PLANTS FROM BROWSE 10. WE PLACED 469 PIECES OF LARGE WOODY DEBRIS THROUGHOUT 3 MILES OF FISH CREEK TO SUPPORT NATURAL PROCESSES THAT ENHANCE SALMON HABITAT WITH OUR PARTNERS AT THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT 11. WE PLACED 372 TREES AS LARGE WOODY DEBRIS THROUGHOUT 8 MILES OF STREAMS IN THE NORTH FORK SIUSLAW WATERSHED WITH OUR PARTNERS AT THE SIUSLAW NATIONAL FOREST AND THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE COOS, LOWER UMPQUA AND SIUSLAW INDIANS 12. WE REPLACED A FISH PASSAGE BARRIER WITH A NEW, FISH-FRIENDLY BRIDGE ON WALKER CREEK WITH OUR PARTNERS AT THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT 13. WE SUPPORTED CLASS FIELDTRIPS WITH THE SIUSLAW AND MAPLETON SCHOOL DISTRICTS, TAKING STUDENTS OUTSIDE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR LOCAL ESTUARY, LAKES AND STREAMS
