About

Direct Family, Youth and Adult ServicesNurturing Parenting ProgramFor the last eight years, we have been contributing to the prevention of child maltreatment by teaching parents and caregivers how to be nurturing, build self-worth, and grow closer as a family. Our Nurturing Parenting Program provides parenting classes and individual case management services to parents with children 5 years old or younger, as well as expecting parents, to develop positive parenting skills. In 2018-19, 57 individuals completed the program at various locations, and all of them reduced at least one risk category as measured by the Adolescent and Adult Parenting Inventory, whether from high to moderate/low risk or from moderate to low risk of abusive parenting. One-fifth of the parents (21%) reduced risk of abusive parenting from high to low risk, while a third (34%) went from high to moderate risk and 45% went from moderate to high risk.Mamas y BebesOur prevention efforts in mental health focused on preventing the onset of major depressive episodes during the pre and postpartum period among Latina women by teaching them mood management skills. We implemented Mamas y Bebes, an interactive program that promotes healthy mood, bonding with one's baby, and strategies for coping with stress, offered to pregnant women and new mothers who are at risk for developing perinatal depression. The 28 participants who completed the program during 2018-19 showed a decrease in depressive symptoms to a level well below the cutoff for at-risk status for clinical depression (from average score 25.8 before the program to 6.52 after the program).Positive Prevention PlusTo prevent teenage pregnancy, we have been delivering the Positive Prevention PLUS curriculum to area youth. In 2018-19, this 14-day evidence-based instruction was provided to all 7th and 8th grade students in three junior high schools, reaching over 1,500 teenagers. Based on a random sample of nine classes, students showed an increase in knowledge of sexual health with average post-test score being 20% higher than their average pre-test score. All sampled classes showed an increased score from pre to post. The BLOCKIn May 2018, we opened a youth drop-in center for youth aged 12 to 21 who need a safe place to be and to receive services. The BLOCK (Build connections - Learn new skills - Overcome barriers - Chill out - Keep coming) provides a positive environment where homeless, foster, and other youth gain tools to build connections with peers and their community, learn and develop skills, become advocates for themselves and learn to access community resources. In 2018-19, the BLOCK served 98 youth who altogether visited the center over 700 times. On average, youth spent close to three hours on each visit, receiving resources, coaching, and employment and independent living skills training.
