Emergency domestic violence shelters - In fiscal year 2018, the center sheltered 291 adults and 630 children. Fourteen percent of shelter families were discharged to safe permanent housing. The center opened the first publicly funded domestic violence shelter in New York state in 1977 and now operates three full-service shelters for victims and their children. The individualized services provided by our shelters give residents the tools they need to break patterns of domestic violence and start new lives. While in shelter, adults and children benefit from counseling, case management, support groups, and workshops, as well as childcare, housing assistance, vocational assistance, recreation, and other crucial services. The center provides ongoing support for former shelter residents.
