About

(a) The Uta Hagen Institute for full time study: (i) Hagen Summer Intensive: 6-week, 5-day, full-time intensive program focused on Uta Hagen's approach to acting technique and rehearsal process, 06/23/19 - 08/02/19, seventeen students served, 4 scholarships granted. (ii) Hagen Core Training Program: A one-year (three-term) intensive full-time curriculum for actors utilizing Uta Hagen's approach to acting technique and rehearsal process. 9/16/18 - 6/07/19, 9 students served, 8 scholarships granted. (iii) Hagen Teachers Lab: A one-week intensive full-time program (three sessions) for actors and educators interested in teaching Uta Hagen's acting exercises and methodology. Off-site hosted by CSU Long Beach 1/02/19 - 1/07/19, on-site 8/04/19 - 8/09/19 and 8/11/19 - 8/16/19, 29 students served, ten scholarships granted. (b) Studio classes for training and practice: Fall, winter, spring, and summer terms: Acting, acting improvisation, acting on camera, scene study, acting technique, movement & the body, musical theatre & singing, speaking voice, speech, directing, playwriting, and more. 3,542 enrollments, in 253 classes/year, September through August, 1,949 students served, 68 scholarships granted, 249 work-study grants. (c) HB Studio special workshops: In addition to our regular term-length studio class schedule, the studio offered short term (1-5 sessions) skill building and special focus workshops with guest artists and regular faculty. 810 enrollments in 62 workshops, 540 students served, 3 scholarships granted, 34 work-study grants. HB offered a series of 20 financial empowerment workshops at $5/session, tailored to needs of performing artists. (d) First Floor Studio Residency Projects: HB Studio's First Floor Studio Residency Program is a 4-week residency that allows artists to rehearse and present a new work at an early- to mid-stage of development with the production capability of HB's First Floor Studio Theater space. Six projects were selected for the 2019 season, 18 weekend work-in-progress performances were presented to the public. This program served 53 artists and an audience of 643. (e) Community partnership: Winston Transitions HB partnered with nonprofit private NYC-based Winston Preparatory School, an innovative day school for students with learning differences. HB teaching artists worked with students in Winston's 'Transitions' program, those who have graduated from 12th grade, but need additional support to transition to the workforce or college. The program served 46 young adults, divided in 6 groups, with eight 60-minute sessions per student, 48 sessions total, using actors' tools to support self-expression, independent learning, communication and social skills. (f) Public programs: Theatre program (i) HB Studio Works-in-Progress Productions: Two co-productions: Too Close by Luigi Laraia, with Lake Arts Foundation, 3 public performances with symposia on climate change, 9/13 - 9/15/18; The Secret Life of Seaweed by Julie McKee, with Collider Theater Company, 10 public performances, 2/2 - 2/16/19. Two weekends of the Pat & Julie Project: Staged readings of 10-minute plays-in-progress, 4 public performances, 11/10 - 11/11/18 and 3/9 - 3/10/19. One lab performance of Rajiv Joseph's Gruesome Playground Injuries, featuring the 2018-2019 class of the Hagen Core Training Program. In all, HB Studio Works-in-Progress Productions served 114 artists and an audience of 951. (ii) Works-in-Progress Readings: Nine (9) readings were presented free of charge, featuring 80 artists, to a total audience of 539. Readings: Vincent Parker's Something Extraordinary Happens directed by David Deblinger (12/1-12/2/18); The Young Uta Hagen: An Actress' Beginnings, curated by Alan Pally (2/25/19); Konstantin Simonov's The Whole World Over directed by Irina Abraham (5/22/19); and six (6) new plays were presented in a reading series titled Others & Us, by playwrights Ellen Delisle, Elizabeth Nichols, Julie McKee, Gwen Kingston, Amanda Quaid & Laura Zlatos (6/25-6/30/19). (iii) People Who Make Theatre Public Talks: A series of public conversations with established artists and industry representatives about their artistic influences, goals, and methods. Eight (8) events were held in FY19. Guest speakers included: Aaron Serotsky & Phoebe Jonas (SAG/AFTRA); Motherline Story Project's Lauren Norvig; Campfire Project's Jessica Hecht & Jenny Gersten; Otisville State Prison Theatre Workshop's Richard Hoehler, Jason Morales, Jay Montanez, Francesca Ferrara, Dice Livingston, El Sun White and Ron Horton; A series of conversations celebrating Uta Hagen's centennial featured William Carden, David Hyde Pierce, Laila Robins, Kelly Wolf, Edward Morehouse & Rochelle Oliver; Helen Sheehy & Milly Barranger; Russell G. Jones, Portia & Allison Easter; George Bartenieff, Patricia Bosworth, Jack Garfein, Deborah Hedwall & Caraid O'Brien. 33 artists participated, 456 audience served. (g) Public programs: New York Public Library Partnership A series of four (4) public programs for Uta Hagen's centennial were presented with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center: Respect for Acting: An Uta Hagen Master Class with Austin Pendleton, featuring Ethan Hawke (4/10/19); Loved Well (Not Wisely): Paul Robeson and Uta Hagen's Othello (5/13/19); Uta Hagen: A Participant in Society (6/3/19); HB Studio Mini Residency: Open Classes at the Astor Gallery (4/8-4/11/19). 54 artists took part, 668 audience served. (h) Studio rentals: 885 short-term (1-3 hrs) studio space rentals to students and faculty for class projects and rehearsals.
