Mission

The Campaign has compiled a winning track record on many issues long considered intractable, including virtually halting highway expansion in northern New Jersey and downstate New York. TSTC's advocacy has led to millions more in funding for transit, cycling and walking throughout the tri-state region. Our publications are based on solid and thorough data analysis and are heavily reported in print and online media, as well as used as informational tools in meetings with elected officials and city and state agencies

About

During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2018, Tri-State Transportation Campaign accomplished the following:Fixing Our Commutes & Making Transit FairIn New York, we co-led a coalition of advocates in favor of congestion pricing. The coalition won a first wave of congestion pricing in the form of new fees on for-hire vehicles that will produce $400-500 million in revenue annually for the MTA, and the governor has endorsed congestion pricing. Thanks to our advocacy as part of the Bus Turnaround coalition, we won a commitment from the MTA to completely revamp bus service citywide in line with our campaign goals. In New Jersey, we successfully advocated for an increase in state funding for NJ Transit and are working with leadership in the governors office and the State Senate to pass legislation to reform NJ Transits board of directors. That legislation was signed by Governor Murphy in December 2018.In Connecticut, we're working with a coalition including Fairfield County Business Council, the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, the Fiscal Stability and Economic Competitiveness Commission, Regional Planning Association, Commuter Action Group, the Commuter Rail Council, the AFL-CIO, Carpenters and Operating Engineers to support a ballot measure establishing a transit lockbox in CT. We are also advocating for funding and development of the Gateway tunnel underneath the Hudson River, which needs critical repairs.Meeting Our Climate GoalsWe also won as part of the MTAs plan to improve bus service a commitment to transition to a fully clean energy fleet by 2040. We are also one of the founding members of Electrify NY, a coalition pushing for statewide electrification of transit and transportation networks. Regionally, we are supporting an effort to develop a regional, multi-state policy model for transportation GHG reduction similar to RGGI. This would potentially result in a program similar to a carbon tax in multiple states. The effort is spearheaded by a number of national and regional environmental groups, EJ groups, and relevant community organizations, with support from pro-transit organizations in the mid-Atlantic states. Thus far, we are the only transit organization at the table in the tri-state. Ending Pedestrian DeathsTri-State developed a model policy that updates the states decade-old Complete Streets model and incorporates sustainability, determinants of health, and economic growth into the original CS model. Our policy is now under review by NJDOT for potential adoption. Our next steps are to push for formal adoption of CCS by NJDOT and then pursue municipal adoption. We have also taken on the role of New Jersey Chair for the steering committee of advocates for the Circuit Trails network.
