Mission

TO PROVIDE MONTANA'S IN-CRISIS AND ABUSED HORSES WITH SHELTER, REHABILITATION AND PLACEMENT IN QUALIFIED, PERMANENT HOMES. TO PROVIDE MONTANA HORSE OWNERS WITH EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE TO HELP THEM BETTER CARE FOR AND WORK WITH THEIR HORSES.

About

Montana Horse Sanctuary has implemented a major transformation this past year. We have gone from actively rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing horses to a whole new paradigm in helping in-crisis horses. Our updated mission includes our core goal of helping Montanas in-crisis and abused horses and we are now achieving our goal primarily by helping horse owners, rescuers and law enforcement in their work. When we started the Sanctuary in 2004, there were very few rescue groups and nonprofits in Montana. Additionally there were few individual horse owners rescuing horses. But today there is a wide array of non-profit, private and individual horse rescuers in our state. We are thrilled by this change because it means more horses are being rescued, many of whom are staying for the rest of their lives with the people who rescue them. Additionally, it means more people are becoming aware of the plight of in-crisis horses and more rescue is happening at the grassroots level. We are strongly encouraging and supporting this statewide effort. We are expanding existing programs we started years ago: 1) We provide grants to horse owners in financial difficulty, known in rescue world as safety net grants. One such owner is an equine assisted psychotherapist in Central Montana who was laid off from her job and had a gap of time before her next job began. All 10 of her horses were rescues and they help her in her work. She is now working with children who have endured trauma and have ended up in the legal system. Two small grants helped her bridge the employment gap and kept her horses properly fed and vetted during a difficult time. 2) We provide help to individual rescuers. A woman near Bozeman has rescued several horses in the past few years. One of the horses, a miniature, recently needed extensive veterinary care for a bad colic episode. The woman ended up with a sizeable veterinary bill in the same week that her furnace quit and she had to replace it. Our assistance helped her pay her veterinary costs and her little mare is home and happy now. 3) We provide on-going finances to our supported adopters. Older, pasture pal horses from the Sanctuary who have been adopted are part of this program. The adopter provides care, a place to live and love. We provide the costs of care as outlined in a contract. Costs of care for these horses include veterinary, feeds, hoof-trims and other necessities. Currently there are horses in this program in Central and Western Montana. It has been a cost-effective way of placing horses who may not have otherwise been adopted. The people who adopt these horses must display a substantial knowledge and experience of horse ownership and have a suitable place for the horse to live as well as at least one companion horse or donkey. Penny is a good example of a supported adoptee. Her adopter is a retired small-animal veterinarian who has a mini-farm rescue. Penny, now in her 30s, enjoys life with another mare and a donkey, as well as a rescued sheep and a flock of happy chickens on a farm in Central Montana. Despite her advanced years, Penny runs to the corral for her dinnertime supplement and back out to pasture in the morning. She enjoys lots of one-on-one time with her adopter. 4) As always we are helping support Montanas law enforcement community during cruelty case seizures.New projects for the Sanctuary include: 1) Providing mentoring and other forms of support to nonprofit rescues and sanctuaries. We have been helping a new rescue near Bozeman come up to speed about fundraising and grants, as well as providing them with equipment the Sanctuary no longer needs such as hay feeders, hay nets, and horse winter blankets. We are so excited to see this organization making rapid progress helping a large number of horses. 2) We are providing financial assistance to other nonprofit rescues and sanctuaries. In every organization there are funding gaps. These gaps are the expenses which are less glamourous and tangible but every bit as necessary to the success of the operation. Our goal with these grants is to put our years of experience to work helping other organizations get the money they need for these kinds of projects such as staff costs, accountant/bookkeeping fees, power bills and so forth. 3) We also help our adopters in general with grants, educational assistance, hands-on help and advice directly from veterinarians. We want the people who have adopted from us to feel they can reach out to us at any point for any kind of help. We want the horses we have cared for and placed in forever homes to remain happy, healthy and safe. Our renewed mission all boils down to the village concept or in this case, it takes a state to rescue horses. Currently our work is small-scale but once the Sanctuary ranch has sold (which we hope will happen by early 2020), our goal is to continue expanding all of our programs and thus our reach throughout Montana. If you are a horse owner or rescuer or know one who needs assistance, please contact us. We will do all we can to help you help your horses.
