Outreach and Education: HKC tours and educational programs continued to raise public awareness for the unique history and character of our city through our Urban Explorers and Walking Tours, Speakers Bureau, and in-depth look at area neighborhoods through Heritage Hikes. The annual Preservation Awards highlighted numerous historic preservation efforts that occurred in the Kansas City area in the year 2018. The final award winners were announced before an audience of owners, industry leaders, and representatives from around the Kansas City metro. The finalists exemplify the finest historic preservation projects from across the metro area. We applaud the dedication and passion of the hundreds of individuals working at these iconic properties and neighborhood reinvestment initiatives that keep the stories alive from the past. (256 + attendees). HKC's events also raised public awareness and appreciation for the history and character of our city by showcasing unique buildings and spaces. Our signature event of 2018 was the Moveable Feast: A Night Out With Hemingway at Union Station. The Hemingway Trolley Tour, based upon the book "Hemingway at Eighteen", took guests on a trip through time to places that Hemingway frequented in Kansas City through the years. (241 attendees) and recognized the I'm A Preservationist Class of 2018. Other achievements included Westport Historic Resources Survey: Public Forum and Presentation of Results (50 attendees), Historic Preservation Month - Social Media Content, Published 60 e-newsletters, Annual Meeting (100 + attendees.) Our Heritage Hike Series included intense 3-hour + adventures highlighting Kansas City history and architecture. The tours included Kansas City's Historic Immigrant Communities (3 Hikes) (60 + attendees), Kansas City's Historic Main Street Communities (3 Hikes) (60 + attendees), Kansas City's First Neighborhoods (3 Hikes) (60 + attendees), Downtown Kansas City (3 Hikes) (60 + attendees), and Kansas City's First Communities (3 Hikes) (60 + attendees). Our outstanding Walking Tours, Urban Explorers, and Speakers Bureau provided opportunities for the community to learn about the architecture and history of Kansas City. The tours included Walking Tours of HKC Union Station & Freight House District Walking Tour (15 + attendees), HKC Downtown Art Deco Walking Tour (15 + attendees), Country Club Plaza Walking Tour (3 tours) (45 + attendees), Urban Explorers: Pickwick Plaza (45 + attendees), Urban Explorers: El Torreon (20 + attendees), 5 Speakers Bureau presentations. With the help of the William T. Kemper Foundation, HKC distributed a reprint of 5,000 copies of the award-winning walking tour brochure of the Country Club Plaza.
