Mission

Penland School of Craft supports individual and artistic growth through creative practice and discovery. Penland School of Craft is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, and wood. The school also offers artists' residencies, community collaboration programs, and a gallery and information center.

PENLAND SCHOOL OF CRAFTS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR CRAFT EDUCATION. PENLAND OFFERS ONE, TWO AND EIGHT WEEK WORKSHOPS IN BOOKS AND PAPER, CLAY, DRAWING, GLASS, IRON, METALS, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTMAKING, TEXTILES, WOOD AND LETTERPRESS STUDIOS. THE SCHOOL ALSO SPONSORS ARTISTS' RESIDENCIES, EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS, AND A CRAFT GALLERY. APPROXIMATELY 1,400 STUDENTS ARE SERVED AND THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 10,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR. PLEASE SEE SCHEDULE O FOR A CONTINUATION OF PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS.IN FY18, PENLAND SERVED APPROXIMATELY 1,400 STUDENTS WITH CRAFT EDUCATION WORKSHOPS IN 15 PROFESSIONALLY EQUIPPED STUDIOS. THE RESIDENT ARTIST PROGRAM CONTINUED TO SUPPORT 8 ARTISTS WITH A 3-YEAR RESIDENCY. THE CORE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM CONTINUED TO ATTRACT OUTSTANDING YOUNG ARTISTS WHO DEVOTE 2 YEARS TO STUDY AT PENLAND IN A WORK-STUDY EXCHANGE. THE PENLAND GALLERY AND VISITORS CENTER WELCOMED APPROXIMATELY 10,000 VISITORS, HELD 4 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS IN THE JOHN & ROBYN HORN GALLERY AND 4 EXHIBITIONS IN THE FOCUS GALLERY, FEATURED WORK BY 216 ARTISTS, AND CONDUCTED 54 TOURS OF CAMPUS FOR 415 VISITORS. WINTER RESIDENCIES PROVIDED 108 VISUAL ARTISTS WITH INDEPENDENT CREATIVE TIME IN ALL OF PENLAND'S STUDIOS DURING JANUARY -FEBRUARY 2018. THE RESIDENT WRITER FOR SUMMER 2017 WAS PAULA OWEN, PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHWEST SCHOOL OF ART. COMMUNITY COLLABORATION PROGRAMS PROVIDED EXPERIENTIAL ARTS EDUCATION FOR THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN, THEIR TEACHERS AND OTHER ADULTS THROUGH TEACHING ARTIST IN THE SCHOOLS FOR GRADES 3, 4, AND 9; THE PROFESSIONAL CRAFT STUDY PROGRAM; SUBS WITH SUITCASES FOR GRADES 2 AND 3; KIDS CAMP; PENLAND'S ANNUAL COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE; AND NUMEROUS COMMUNITY FESTIVALS AND OTHER SPECIAL INITIATIVES.
