21st Century Community Learning Centers: Communities In Schools (CIS) 21st Century Community Learning Centers Student Support Coaches serve as coordinators for five school sites within the Cleveland County Schools system, including James Love Elementary School, Marion Elementary School, Shelby Intermediate School, Shelby Middle School, and Shelby High School. These five sites provide a range of services to support student learning and enrichment, including services after school four days per week and limited support services during the school day. The current cohort is defined as Next Generation Leaders, and the overarching principle guiding the design is a focus on reading and math achievement. To that end, much of the afterschool component is based on collaboration with the students teachers and with teacher-tutors who provide individualized support and opportunities for independent practice and enrichment on specific standards, as identified by their regular classroom teachers, aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The afterschool program also provides enrichment opportunities in science, technology, engineering, art, music, business, and financial literacy.
