The Brooklyn- Queens-Long Island Area Health Education Center (BQLI-AHEC) is one of nine centers throughout New York State. Its mission is to improve health care outcomes by increasing the pool of skilled providers working in traditionally underserved communities.

The Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) places high school and college students in six-week placements through a network of more than twenty hospitals, nursing and rehabilitation centers and community health centers. Once a week, students attend workshop sessions and participate in presentations by diverse health professionals. BQLI-AHEC in partnership with the New York City Metropolitan Area Health Education Centers offers a six-week Community Health Experience (CHE) Program for medical school students who have completed their first year of training and are interested in hands-on work in the area of community and public health. The Community Health Experience Program (CHE) was developed through a partnership with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and collaboration with the New York Metropolitan Regional AHEC office and the three AHECs serving New York City: Brooklyn-Queens-Long Island AHEC; Bronx/Westchester AHEC and Manhattan/Staten Island AHEC.The Medical Academy of Science and Health (M.A.S.H) Camp gives students the opportunity to spend a half a day at a hospital or health profession learning institution to learn about health care professions through hands on activities and presentations. BQLI AHEC coordinates these activities for students attending the Academy for Health Careers High School in Brooklyn, New YorkThe NYC DOE Career and Technical Education Industry Scholars Program,CTE-ISP is a program for high school students enrolled in a healthcare course of study at one of the NYC DOE Career and Technical Education (CTE) high schools. BQLI AHEC places participating students in internships at local hospitals and community based health organization. BQLI AHEC also organizes career days, work based tours, and educational workshops on work readiness skills.The NYS AHEC Scholars Program is a state-wide program designed to provide college and graduate level health profession students with community based learning opportunities in underserved and medically disadvantaged communities. Students are also required to complete an online curriculum that addresses topics designed to augment patient care, including cultural competency, practice transformation, behavioral health integration, and interprofessional care.National AHEC Organization(NAO) HPV Immunization Education Project funded by the Center for Disease Control(CDC) provides continuing education training to health care providers about the HPV vaccine.State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Careers Opportunity Program: BQLI AHEC staff coordinates career exploration activities and workshops for high school health career students participating in this program.
