Friends of the River protects and restores California Rivers. We envision a climate resilient water future with healthy rivers, equal access to safe and affordable drinking water, and a thriving sustainable economy for all Californians.

Friends of the River (FOR) protects and restores California rivers and their watersheds through government relations, citizen action and education . FOR protects rivers from costly and environmentally destructive dams and diversions, particularly on the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. We also protect rivers through state and federal wild and scenic designation. FOR restores rivers by improving streamflow and other aquatic habitat through the relicensing of non-federal dams in California. Finally, we engage the public through our grassroots network, earned media, Educational river trips, and the river advocacy training school where volunteers are trained as river advocates and organize a series of outreach events over the five month program.
