The Gateway School of New York teaches children with language-based learning disabilities and/or attention deficit the skills and strategies necessary to become independent learners able to identify and advocate for their needs. Students are supported by a high level of structure, given clear explanations, and are taught according to their individual needs by virtue of diagnostic instruction. Through the execution of effective, research-validated direct instruction, students learn 'how to learn,' experience success, and develop the self-awareness and confidence that inspires them to assume ever-increasing responsibility for their learning. An independent school curriculum weaves together the skills and strategies necessary for learning with the academic content required for successful participation in general classrooms. Gateway students transition to mainstream school settings when it is clear they can do so successfully. The Gateway School educated 92 students during fiscal year 2018-2019 and also provided language and occupational therapy and counseling to all students.
