Mission

Since its inception in 1968, Spanish Theatre Repertory Company, Ltd (Repertorio Español) has remained committed to its original mission: to introduce the best of Latin American, Spanish and Hispanic-American theatre in distinctive, quality productions, and to bring theatre to a broad audience in New York City and across the country, including seniors, students and Hispanics of all national backgrounds.

About

Since its inception in 1968, Spanish Theatre Repertory Company, Ltd., has remained committed to producing an unparalleled repertoire of contemporary and classical plays from Spain, Latin America and the Hispanic-American community. It also aims to instill a sense of pride of heritage for all Latinos in the United States as well as creating opportunities for cultural exchange with all Americans. In this tradition, Repertorio shared with audiences an array of theatrical activities and outreach programs. Season accomplishments and highlights included a production of Fernando de Rojas' La Celestina, directed by Leyma Lopez. Similar to Romeo and Juliet, La Celestina tells of Calisto's tragic socially-forbidden love for Melibea. The story's style and prose (a novel written in dialogue form) it is said to have influenced a whole body of literary works including Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote. Dealing with the corruption of moral values and sexual mores, this tragicomedy is as relevant today as it was 500 years ago. Also, we are proud to report that the production formed part of the Theatre Without Borders conference on June 25th at Wesleyan University. As part of the event, Repertorio presented pivotal scenes from the play and held a Q&A session after the performance for students. Repertorio collaborated with UCLA professor Barbara Fuchs and the department's Diversifying the Classic team. This group of scholars translated this version into English and developed a study guide to accompany future performances of the play as part of their goal of bringing Golden Age plays to future generations. An adaptation of Eduardo de Filippo's Filomena Marturano. Set in the Caribbean, this classic Neapolitan play was translated and adapted by Repertorio's producers Robert Federico and Rafael Sánchez with Repertorio's resident director Leyma Lopez directing. The production balanced the repertory of 13 plays with a tragi-comic and cynical look at a family's complicated relationships within a male-dominated society when a strong woman is present. The New York Times wrote of the production, 'You get binge-worthy drama in tasty 30-minute acts, watching flesh and blood actors at the top of their game. And a reminder that what makes us human is the same from sunny Naples to the turquoise beaches of the Caribbean.' The New York premiere of Colombian comic Saulo Garcia's new work, I am Latino, directed by Repertorio's Alfonso Rey and starring company member, Gerardo Gudino. I am Latino is a response to recent anti-immigrant sentiments festering in the nation. Building on Latinx stereotypes, I am Latino deconstructs those same misrepresentation to highlight the diversity of traditions, music, food, and beliefs within the community. A limited run of Guillem Clua's romantic comedy, Smiley in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Pride. Showcasing the universality of two opposite personalities falling in love, the play explores the stereotypes and the mores of an intellectual and a gym-rat as their love develops against all odds. Continuing their run into the 2019 season, Repertorio's commissioned works (Nilo Cruz's Exquisite Agony and Jorge Ali Triana's adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's No One Writes to the Colonel) celebrated the company's mission by showcasing Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning writers. For the first time, through a partnership with Montclair University, Repertorio offered a special presentation of No One Writes to the Colonel for blind audiences with audio description, accompanied by Braille playbills and a pre-show tactile 'on stage' walking tour. Also, Repertorio toured to Miami with Nilo Cruz's Exquisite Agony. These two plays were instrumental in Repertorio gaining recognition and being awarded a Drama Desk Award for 'presenting a year-round rotating repertory of new and classic Spanish-language plays in its intimate Gramercy venue.' Invited guest artists. This 2019 season, Repertorio had the honor of hosting artists from Spain and Venezuela. In the fall, international flamenco sensation, Olga Pericet, returned to Repertorio for a special presentation of her new dance program, Enfoque. Also, Repertorio hosted a production of Tequila or Rum, a play by award-winning Venezuelan author Gennys Perez about reinventing lives in a new country while still holding on to the past. These international artists drew new audiences to Repertorio. In addition to the new works, Repertorio retained in repertory audience favorites such La Cancion, Dona Flor y sus Dos Maridos, In the Time of the Butterflies, The House of Bernarda Alba, and La Gringa. As a whole, Repertorio 20 different productions (including guest artists), serving roughly 35,000 people. An important aspect of Repertorio's work is introducing students and serving as a resource for school. Repertorio is proud to have continued this tradition through its Dignidad program, engaging new generations in theatre as first audience members and/or participants in theatre making activities. Program highlights included: 93 school-day matinees for school groups (grades 6-12) at Repertorio. From classic to contemporary, from comedies to drama, students had the opportunity of seeing a spectrum of works. For the majority of students - many of whom are from underserved school districts - Repertorio represented their first time experiencing live theater. For students taking Spanish as a second-language, our works served to deepen their knowledge of the language and reinforce their classroom curriculum. All school-day matinee performances included pre-performance lectures and post-performance Q&A periods, providing students context and opportunity for engagement. 17 special weekday, early evening and Saturday matinee performances for universities & community colleges. These performances served students taking Hispanic literature or Spanish-language courses. Tours to different venues throughout the New York tri-state area including to Hostos Cultural Arts Center (Bronx, NY); Sugar Hill Children's Museum (New York, NY); Lycee Francais (New York, NY), Nightingale-Bamford (New York, NY); Maloney High School (Meriden, CT); Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT); Brentwood High School (Brentwood, NY); Rafael Hernández High School (Newark, NJ), among others. In-school residencies at 16 NYC schools, serving 1,261 students with personalized drama sessions to meet their academic needs. All in-school residencies participants had the opportunity to perform at a culminating event, either at the school or at Repertorio for their parents and peers.
