About

ALAXSXA | ALASKA is an original theater work exploring the complex histories, cultures, and environments of Alaska, created by Ping Chong, artist Ryan Conarro, and Gary Beaver (Central Yup'ik). It premiered at the University of Alaska Anchorage in August 2017, followed by an Alaskan tour before its New York premiere at La MaMa ETC in 2017. Due to popular demand ALAXSXA | ALASKA returned to Alaska in Fall 2018 for a second, five-city tour.Undesirable Elements: Generation NYZ was commissioned by the New Victory Theater, and premiered January 2018 at the Duke on 42nd Street. Created by Sara Zatz and Kirya Traber, GenNYZ features seven New Yorkers (ages 18 to 22) from across the city sharing stories of the challenges and joys of growing up New York City, including experiences with immigration and homelessness, depression and loss, gender and sexual identity. In 2019, Generation NYZ had a return engagement at La MaMa ETC for 8 public performances and three student matinees. Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity (BSVMI) is a work in the UE series exploring the first-hand experiences of a diverse group of young Muslim New Yorkers in a time of rising Islamophobia. BSVMI was written by Ping Chong, Sara Zatz, and Ryan Conarro, and premiered at LaGuardia Performing arts Center in April of 2015. Since then, it has toured to 10 states and Washington, D.C, and has been seen by over 13,000 people. In FY19 BSVMI toured to New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Vermont. It was presented at Maxine Greene High School in New York City and in Albany, Oswego, and Clinton, NY.(Un)Conditional and Difficult Lives PCC created two new pieces on chronic health conditions and disability issues. In partnership with the Profile Theatre in Portland, Oregon, Sara Zatz created (Un)Conditional, focusing on the experiences of people living with chronic illness, and exploring the role of care-giving. (Un)Conditional premiered in February 2019, and ran for 8 performances. In Japan, Ping Chong worked with the Big-i theater in Osaka to create a new work on disability, chronic conditions, loneliness and isolation. Difficult Lives was presented for sold out runs in Tokyo and Osaka in January 2019.Calling: a dance with faith is a dance theater piece exploring the lives of two Muslim women as they wrestle with their call to dance and their call to faith. Their religious and artistic journeys intersect, as both Muslims and dancers, in this rich and perceptive performance of movement and storytelling. Calling will premiere May 23-24th, 2019 as part of the LaMaMa Moves Dance Festival. Arts Education and Training In FY19 PCC offered its annual summer training at LaGuardia Community College, for 25 participants. PCC continued its arts education programs, returning to MS191, PS84, and MS256 in Manhattan, Q102 in Queens, and adding a program with Q91 in Queens, as well as continuing its partnership with Global Kids. PCC also completed the 3nd year of partnership with NJPAC, working in two schools in New Jersey. PCC served approximately a total of 1000 students through our arts education programs in FY19.
