About

Second Stage Theater took a monumental step forward during our 2017-18 season with the opening of our new Broadway home, the Hayes Theater. With the Hayes, we have created the first Broadway theater dedicated exclusively to living American writers. We celebrated the opening of the Theater with a dynamic lighting ceremony for our donors and friends in February 2018. Our renovation of the theater received extraordinary coverage in the New York Times, with a terrific feature by Michael Paulson. On the podcast "Three on the Aisle," Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal said: "This is a company of real consequence that has got that toehold on Broadway. Nothing has inspired me, made me more hopeful, than Second Stage making this move." Our 39th season started with Torch Song, the first major NYC production of this groundbreaking work since its Broadway debut 35 years ago. Written by Harvey Fierstein and directed by Moises Kaufman, the play follows Arnold Beckoff as he searches for love, purpose, and family. The cast included Michael Urie, Mercedes Reuhl, Roxana Hope Radja, Jack DiFalco, Ward Horton, and Michael Rosen. Torch Song was extended twice and ran from September 26 December 9, 2017 at the Tony Kiser Theater, reaching an audience of more than 23,000. Next up at the Kiser Theater was Cardinal, a world premiere commission by Greg Pierce. The play is set in a small Rust Belt city in decline. A former resident returns to her hometown with a big idea painting the entire downtown cardinal red that she is sure will draw tourists, attract new businesses, and save the city. Cardinal was directed by Kate Whoriskey and the cast included Becky Ann Baker, Anna Chlumsky, Alex Hurt, Adam Pally, Stephen Park, and Eugene Young. The play ran from January 9 February 25, 2018, and was seen by 12,250. Our first show at the Hayes was Kenneth Lonergans Lobby Hero, starring Michael Cera, Chris Evans, Brian Tyree Henry, and Bel Powley. In this provocative drama, the lobby of a Manhattan apartment building is much more than a waiting area for four New Yorkers involved in a murder investigation. Lobby Hero was directed by Trip Cullman and was seen by 44,000 audience members during its run from March 1 May 13, 2018. The show was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play. Our summer show at the Kiser was Mary Page Marlowe by Tracy Letts, which follows the life of an ordinary accountant from Ohio who has experienced pain and joy, success and failure. The cast featured Blair Brown, Emma Geer, Mia Sinclair Jenness, Tatiana Maslany, Kellie Overbey, and Susan Pourfar as the title character at different points in her life, as well as David Aaron Baker, Kayli Carter, Audrey Corsa, Marcia DeBonis, Nick Dillenburg, Ryan Foust, Tess Frazer, Grace Gummer, Brian Kerwin, Maria Elena Ramirez, Elliot Villar, and Gary Wilmes. The play was directed by Lila Neugebauer, and it was was extended by one week to run from June 19 August 19, 2018. It was seen by a total audience of 20,800. The season concluded with Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee at the Hayes. With this production, Young Jean became the first Asian American female writer to have her work produced on Broadway. In this dark comedy, Ed has gathered his three adult sons to celebrate Christmas with matching pajamas, trash-talking, and Chinese takeout. But when a question they cant answer interrupts their holiday cheer, they are forced to confront their privileged identities. Directed by Anna Shapiro, the cast included Armie Hammer, Josh Charles, Paul Schneider, and Stephen Payne. The play ran from June 29 - September 9, 2018 and was seen by 48,200 audience members. Additional Programs for Artists As part of our commitment to developing new work and enhancing the landscape of contemporary American theater, we regularly commission works from talented playwrights at various points in their careers. We have robust partnerships with the Center Theater Group in Los Angeles, the Williamstown Theater Festival, and True Colors Theater in Atlanta to jointly commission and develop work. We commissioned eight new writers in FY2018, including Young Jean Lee, Paula Vogel, Lisa Kron, Jen Silverman, Anna Ziegler, Lisa DAmour, Lauren Yee, and Jocelyn Bioh. In total we are working with 22 writers on commissions. Throughout the year, we also hold readings and workshops, working with both emerging and established playwrights and directors to help them develop their newest work for the stage. We hosted 13 readings in FY2018, for projects including The Lypsinka Project by John Epperson and Jonathan Tollins; Flying Over Sunset by Tom Kitt, James Lapine, and Michael Korie; and Motherland by Aaron Weinstein. Education and Outreach Second Stages productions serve as the basis for a variety of Education and Outreach programs. Our Free Student Matinees bring 1,000 students from NYC public schools to Second Stage Theater each year. For many students, this experience is their first exposure to live, professionally-produced theater. Prior to the performance, students and teachers receive copies of a study guide that introduces them to the play and encourages them to think critically about the plays subject matter. A post-show discussion with the cast and creative team provides a deeper exploration of the play by allowing students to inquire about the shows themes and the creative theatrical process. For many young people, the high cost of tickets prevents them from attending the theater; Second Stage Theaters Affordable Ticket Initiative aims to decrease this barrier by offering deeply discounted tickets to students and young people. For each performance, we offer Youth Advance tickets for $30. Student Rush tickets can be purchased one hour before each performance for $23, subject to availability. In 2018 we added a new low-cost ticket opportunity, $22 Second Previews. Through this program, all tickets for the second preview performance of each show are $22. Our subsidized ticket offerings continue to be extremely popular, serving approximately 10,800 young people last season. Finally, in order to make theater more accessible to the visually impaired and deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, we offer open captioned and audio described performances for all of our mainstage productions. Second Stage Works Around the World Works developed at Second Stage continue to contribute to the vitality of the American theatrical landscape and have flourished on Broadway, at regional theaters, and abroad in the past year. Recent examples include Notes From the Field by Anna Deavere Smith an adapted version of which is currently airing on HBO; and Dear Evan Hansen, which continues to sell out and break box office records at Broadways Music Box Theater after winning six Tony Awards in 2017. The show will embark on a national tour in late 2018 and have its first international production in Canada in 2019. Lynn Nottages By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, which had its world premiere at Second Stage in 2011, will be seen at Signature Theater in 2019. In total, through touring and regional productions of plays that originated here, our work reached an estimated audience of 900,000 around the world last year.
