Mission

To diversify participation in opera through the mentorship of emerging operatic writers and the development of new works.

About

COMPOSER LIBRETTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - MENTORSHIP: ALT continued to offer its acclaimed Composer Librettist Development Program in 2018. The CLDP is the most extensive full-time resident artist program for emerging writers for the opera stage. In the first half of 2018, ALT continued the first year of a new multi-year cycle of the CLDP, welcoming three composers, three librettists and one dramaturg fellow as resident artists. In addition, artists working on previously commissioned operas through the CLDP continued to receive mentorship through the program, along with newly commissioned artists. The CLDP includes a core curriculum of classroom training and hands-on workshops with some of the country's leading artists, including composer/librettist Mark Adamo, librettist Mark Campbell, dramaturg Cori Ellison, and director/dramaturg Lawrence Edelson. In addition to ongoing classes and workshops, artists in the CLDP take part in observerships at The Metropolitan Opera, during which they have the opportunity to explore the rehearsal process for fully staged operatic productions. (A total of 15 artists were served through the CLDP in 2018).
