Mission

THE MISSION OF FIASCO THEATER IS TO OFFER DYNAMIC, JOYFUL, ACTOR-DRIVEN PRODUCTIONS OF CLASSIC AND NEW PLAYS, AND TO OFFER HIGH-LEVEL THEATRICAL TRAINING THROUGH CLASS & WORKSHOPS.

About

In 2018, we launched a free reading series in an effort to present more work to our audiences, as well as increase our development capacity for future productions. Each reading took place publicly for up to sixty audience members, with certain readings including an additional talkback component. Readings included: Sheltered by Alix Sobler on September 17, 2018 curated by Emily Young; Songs of Resistance: Singing Truth to Power on October 22, 2018 curated by Ben Steinfeld and Paul Coffey; and Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo on November 19, 2018 curated by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld. We are continuing this series during the upcoming grant period, and are currently determining which shows will be included in 2019. Each year we will present three readings curated by a Fiasco company member with certain readings including an additional talkback component and attended by over sixty audience members. Fiasco is also dedicated to providing professional-level training to up-and-coming and established actors. We share our style and textual expertise with students in workshops and classes that are underwritten by our generous donors, allowing us to teach students at low or no cost to the participant. Specifically, we do this through our Free Training Initiative (FTI) and assorted workshops and master classes throughout the year. Launched in 2008, the FTI is a three-week, conservatory-level classical acting intensive for professional actors. In the first week, we focus on a monologue of the students choosing; the second week, students are assigned a two-person scene from a Shakespeare play; and in the third week, we focus on implementing Fiascos ensemble techniques while staging Shakespeares work. We have offered at least one FTI taught by Fiasco company members each year since 2008, and have trained over 120 young professionals. While the FTI is completely free of charge to students, Fiasco compensates its teaching artists at a living wage. We are offering a new session of FTI March 12-30, 2019 taught by Noah Brody, with a possible second session later in the spring. In 2018, we offered an FTI session October 2-18, taught by Jessie Austrian and Noah Brody. We also offer low cost workshops throughout the year, and recently expanded the master class program offered by company members. In 2018, a selection of Fiascos workshops included Shakespeare: Verse & Prose, offered August 21-23 and again September 5-7, taught by Ben Steinfeld and Unpacking the Play, offered September 12-14, taught by Noah Brody. We once again offered Intro to Clown with Zachary Michael Fine, November 17th & November 18th. Ben Steinfeld and Paul Coffey held Advanced Rehearsal Technique, offering 10 students 20 hours of rehearsal on a single play. This class took place November 6- 16, 2018.
