About

In 2019 we again hosted 200 veterans through our monthly events, who came to us through our partner VAMC's from several counties in Southern California (West LA VA, Loma Linda VA, Long Beach VA), veterans from a local DAV, American Legion in Pacific Palisades and Warrior Built Foundation in Lake Elsinore. Members of USAF Det-3 attached at Grey Butte Airfield continue to partner with us as volunteer support cooking and serving the BBQ and providing camaraderie for participants. Our neighboring residents continue to provide home-baked goods for the veterans.Recreation therapists and veterans themselves report that the soaring flight is an exceptionally energizing, therapeutic, and healing experience for dealing with their PTS and other disabling injuries. Recreation therapists report that the soaring flight is the number one requested recreational activity at the VA.Soaring Academy's 8th-grade Glider-STEM program exposes young people to the world of aviation in a way that unlocks undiscovered potential. Cross-curricular hands-on experiences and an actual flight lesson provide real world opportunities for students in innovative ways. Over 2,000 grade school and high school students were exposed to hands on instruction at their school with one of our gliders staged at their school campus for a day of learning. We also participated at a high school career day at Camarillo Airport where over 500 junior high school students were exposed to the glider and tow plane for an intro to all things glider/aviation. Over 180 13-16 year olds flew with us for their first instructional flight in 2019 as part of our education outreach.
