The Greater Milwaukee Committee is a private sector civic organization that aims to contribute to the cultural and economic base of the Milwaukee area. The organization was formed in the late 1940's. During the past 70+ years the Greater Milwaukee Committee has been at the forefront of major projects that provide long-term benefit to the economic and cultual vitality of the metropolitan area. It has been particularly active in the arts, downtown redevelopment, transportation, health and major building projects for professional sports and other purposes. More recently, GMC has initiated projects for neighborhood revitalization and improvement of the equality of educational institutions in the community. The active members of GMC serve on various committees that are responsible for each project. It is an organization in which members actively do the work, with the support of a small staff.
