Mission

Art Aids Art promotes education, literacy, wellbeing and sustainable economic development through the arts in South Africa and the United States.

About

In 2008, Art Aids Art established Ekaya Ekasi, an art and education center in Khayelitsha, near Cape Town. The center hosts after-school and senior programs as well as small business training and skill development workshops for women. AIDS education and health access are integrated into all programming. In addition, Ekaya Ekasi's four micro-enterprises create employment and generate local income. Achieving self-sufficiency enables women to support their households, send their children to school and avoid risky practices such as trading sex for food and shelter. In the AIDS capital of the world, such choices can be lifesaving. Through partnerships with schools and universities in the United States, Art Aids Art engages in education and community awareness involving South African culture and the AIDS crisis. To further its economic development goals, Art Aids Art markets the work of South Africans through home-based trunk sales, retailing and wholesaling, and reinvests profits into its programs. Annual service learning trips engage American students and professionals in volunteer projects and socially conscious cultural tourism in Cape Town.
