About

Homes of Hope Fiji spoke with a stronger voice and took greater steps of coordinated and cohesive action by networking the resources and efforts of grassroots organizations and policy stakeholders. This networking strength is important to protect victims of sexual violence our primary, target population. Homes of Hope networked with over 55 different government and non-government agencies to affect action and policy against sexual violence of women and girls.Secondly, HOH worked in 44 distinct communities to foster ownership for protection and prevention of sexual exploitation toward girls. The purpose of community ownership is to create safety nets against cycles of violence, systems of inequality, and sexual predation. Various toolkits were taught to over 360 participants who learned how to take new, positive action to bring change. One of the toolkits regularly implemented was Homes of Hopes Thumbs UP! early childhood curriculum to teach preschoolers about safe and unsafe touch and to find safe people in their community who can help them when or if they are sexually abused. Over thirty schools and clubs actively use this curriculum. Thirdly, in 2018, HOH staff rescued 20 girls or young women who were victims of forced sex and sex trafficking. The girls were installed on HOHs residential campus to heal and to help them gain a fresh start in life. They will receive personal counseling and training in areas of entrepreneurial or employment skills such as sewing, arts, computer, hospitality, farming, gardening, and household care. Additionally, skill training is offered on campus to protect the vulnerable from becoming victims. Thirty four nonresident girls attended this skills training which led to wage employment or entrepreneurial business opportunities. This year, after having spent two to three years of restoration training on campus, HOH reintegrated eight young women back into safe communities. Twenty two victim cases were referred to other government and nongovernment (NGO)service agencies.
